YUMINST wins patent infringement lawsuit for leak detection sensor

YUMINST (CEO Kim Dong-hwan), an SME firm that developed a flexible leak detection sensor, announced on the 28th that it won a patent infringement lawsuit.

According to YUMINST, this patent lawsuit began in May 2015 when YUMINST, the patent holder, filed a lawsuit in the Seoul District Court in a dispute over patent infringement.

Companies A and B, which were found to be infringing in the first trial, were dissatisfied with the court’s decision and appealed to the Patent Court, the second trial court, in September 2017. However, when they received the same infringement decision, they appealed to the Supreme Court in October 2018. As of January 17, 2019, the appeal has been dismissed.

A YUMINST company representative in charge of R&D said, "The technology at issue in this patent infringement lawsuit is a technology for an outdoor waterproof leak detection sensor. It does not react to water but selectively reacts only to chemical solutions. It uses a reactive membrane structure that detects leakage and is one of the original technologies developed by YUMINST’s R&D department,” he explained.

CEO Kim Dong-hwan of YUMINST said, "Since the company was founded in 2004, we have developed technology related to leak detectors, the first in Korea, and have registered 130 intellectual property rights both domestically and overseas. "This has taken a huge toll on our company," he said. "With this victory in the patent infringement lawsuit, we will hold strong legal responsibility against companies that infringe patent rights, and in particular, punitive damages will be imposed for infringing." He said, “By utilizing the compensation system to compensate for enormous damages (three times the amount of damages), our country will secure national competitiveness by creating a society where patent rights are recognized and protected.”

Meanwhile, Korea’s leak detection sensor market has been dominated by Japan's Omron, France's TTK, and America's Tyco Termal.

Based on printed electronic technology using new sensor materials and conductive ink independently developed by Yumin ST in 2007, various new flexible water leakage sensors, liquid sensors and chemical detection sensors were developed. They overcome the shortcomings of existing cable-type sensors and provide a domestic alternative to imported sensors.
